Exploring the Magical Christmas Markets of Europe

This past December, I had the incredible opportunity to experience AmaWaterways’ Christmas Markets on the Rhine cruise—and it was nothing short of magical. From the moment I stepped on board the AmaStella in Basel to the final disembarkation in Amsterdam, the week was filled with twinkling lights, festive markets, and unforgettable moments along Europe’s most scenic river.

Arriving in Basel, Switzerland, I was immediately charmed by the city’s festive spirit and historic architecture. Boarding the ship, I was welcomed into a warm, elegantly decorated environment, the perfect home base for the week ahead. Settling into my stateroom overlooking the river, I felt the excitement of the journey start to build.
Our first stop was Strasbourg, France. Known for its Christkindelsmärik, France’s oldest Christmas market, the city truly felt like a holiday storybook come to life. Wandering the historic streets filled with festive lights, tasting seasonal pastries, and admiring the towering Cathédrale de Nôtre Dame made me fall in love with Strasbourg instantly.
Next, we traveled to Germany, with options to visit Heidelberg or Speyer. I chose Heidelberg, where the medieval streets and castle ruins overlooking the city were breathtaking. The Christmas market was cozy and charming; I sipped hot chocolate while strolling among the stalls, savoring the festive aromas and soaking in the holiday atmosphere.

Cruising through the Rhine Gorge was one of the most picturesque parts of the trip. Castle after castle perched on hilltops lined the river, each one more majestic than the last. In Rüdesheim, I experienced the famous Rüdesheim coffee (which is a must do) and then explored the local Christmas market. The combination of holiday lights, local treats, and historic charm made this stop unforgettable.

Cologne offered two very different but equally captivating experiences in the combination or walking tour and Kolsch beer and potato pancake tasting – yum! In Cologne, the Christmas markets were lively and full of holiday spirit, from the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds to the handcrafted gifts that lined every street corner.

One of my favorite days was simply cruising the Rhine. From the ship, I could watch Europe’s winter landscapes glide by—vineyards, charming towns, and castles perched on hillsides. There’s something magical about experiencing these views while wrapped in a cozy blanket with a hot drink in hand.
We ended our journey in Amsterdam. Cruising through the city’s canals, I marveled at the historic buildings, twinkling lights, and festive decorations that reflected perfectly in the water. I also explored local cafés, indulging in Dutch treats and taking in the city’s vibrant energy one last time.

Leaving the ship was bittersweet. I departed with a suitcase full of gifts, a heart full of memories, and a deep appreciation for the holiday traditions, sights, and flavors that make Europe’s Christmas markets so special.

From the festive décor and gourmet meals to the thoughtfully curated excursions, this cruise allowed me to fully immerse myself in the holiday spirit.
